Blood group
testing in London
£60, no consultation needed. A quick appointment with our nurse and a documented result for your form.
The NHS will not do this on request
Your blood group is tested when there is a clinical reason: in pregnancy, before surgery, if you are transfused. It is not something your GP will do because you would like to know, and it is not recorded anywhere you can simply look up. So if you need it in writing, private testing is the route.
There is no consultation, because there is nothing to consult about. This is a straightforward test with four possible answers and a rhesus status. You see our nurse, a sample is taken, and you get a documented result. Sixty pounds, nothing else to pay.
Worth knowing: if you simply want to find out and are not in any hurry, donating blood will tell you free of charge. It takes a few weeks and you will not get a document you can submit anywhere. If you have a form to fill in or a deadline, book here instead.
Who books this
Usually because something asks for it
A visa or employment form
Some applications ask for blood group and will not accept "I think I am O positive".
Diving and sports paperwork
Certain medicals and event entries require it, particularly for expeditions and remote events.
Planning a family
Rhesus status is the part that matters here, and it is worth knowing before rather than during a pregnancy.
Travelling somewhere remote
Some employers and expedition organisers want it on file before you go.
Family or donor reasons
People being assessed as living donors, or simply wanting it recorded properly.
You would just like to know
Entirely reasonable. It is a small thing to have written down.
Be clear
What this test is, and what it is not
What you get
What it is not
One result is worth acting on. If you are rhesus negative and pregnant or planning a pregnancy, tell your midwife or GP. Rhesus negative mothers may need anti-D treatment, and it is managed as part of routine antenatal care.
Questions
Things people ask us
Do I really not need a consultation?
No. This is the one test on the site where there is nothing to interpret, so charging you £89 to be told your blood group would be taking the mickey. You see our nurse, the sample is taken, and that is the appointment. Sixty pounds covers everything.
Can I not find this out for free?
If you donate blood, you will be told your group at no cost. That is genuinely the cheaper route if you are eligible, willing and not in a hurry. What it will not give you is a documented result on headed paper within a few days, which is what most people booking here actually need.
Will this help in an emergency?
Not really, and it is worth saying. Hospitals crossmatch your blood before transfusing regardless of what a card or a certificate says, because the consequences of getting it wrong are severe. Knowing your group is useful information; it is not a safety measure.
How do I book?
WhatsApp is quickest. Message us and we will find you a slot, usually within a day or two. You can also book online if you prefer, though you will need to choose the nurse appointment rather than a GP consultation.
